Grote of St. Janskerk, Gothic church in Schiedam, Netherlands.
Grote of St. Janskerk is a Gothic hall church in Schiedam built with three naves showing the hallmark style of Holland Gothic. Inside you will find a Renaissance organ case and one of the oldest baptismal fonts in the Netherlands.
The church was founded in 1335 on the site of an earlier chapel dating to 1262. A major city fire in 1428 prompted significant rebuilding that expanded the structure.
The consistory room displays walls covered in golden leather and reflects how church leadership expressed its importance in the 18th century. The ornate interior shows the value placed on the space where major decisions were made.
The church welcomes visitors and offers guided tours to explore the interior and historical features. Check the opening times beforehand as they may vary depending on the season and local events.
The tower houses a carillon of 38 bells, with 13 original bells cast by Andreas de Gheyn in 1786. Three large ringing bells were cast in different centuries and form a rare collection of historical bell foundry work.
