Erenstein Castle, Medieval castle in Kerkrade, Netherlands
Erenstein Castle is a medieval castle in Kerkrade, in the south of the Netherlands, surrounded by a water-filled moat fed by the Anstelerbeek stream. The building has thick stone walls and round corner towers, and sits in the Anstel valley within a green park.
The castle was built in the 14th century and served as a defensive structure in the Kerkrade area. A serious fire in 1722 destroyed much of it, and the reconstruction that followed gave the building the form it has today.
The name Erenstein is thought to derive from an old word for honor, reflecting the standing the site once held in the region. Visitors walking through the grounds today will notice that the rooms are arranged around hospitality, with the courtyard and garden used regularly for outdoor gatherings.
The castle operates as a hotel and event venue, so parts of the interior are accessible only to guests or event attendees. It is worth checking in advance whether a private function is scheduled, as this can limit access to some areas on a given day.
In 2021 and 2022, the castle was used as a filming location for a Dutch television series, drawing visitors who recognized it from the screen. A separate historic bathhouse on the grounds, sometimes called the castle bath, is listed as a protected monument in its own right.
