Erasmusbrug, Cable-stayed bridge in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The Erasmus Bridge extends 802 meters across the Nieuwe Maas river, featuring a 139-meter asymmetrical steel pylon connected by 40 supporting cables.
The bridge, completed in 1996 and designed by Ben van Berkel, connects the northern and southern districts of Rotterdam through both cable-stayed and bascule sections.
Named after Renaissance scholar Desiderius Erasmus, the bridge structure resembles a swan shape, reflecting Rotterdam's commitment to innovative architectural expression.
The structure includes dedicated lanes for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, while its bascule section opens to allow tall vessels to pass underneath.
Engineers installed additional shock dampers after discovering the bridge's susceptibility to wind-induced movement during its initial operational period.
