Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel, football stadium

Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel is a football stadium in Rotterdam that opened in 1916 and serves as the home of Sparta Rotterdam. The venue features multiple stands including the Tonny van Ede Stand along the north side for premium seating, the Denis Neville Stand at one end for vocal supporters, the Bok de Korver Stand for families and visiting fans, and the Kasteel Stand at the south end connected to the historic castle building.

The stadium was built in 1916 following designs by architects J.H. de Roos and W.F. Overeynder and was originally called Stadion Spangen. It hosted two football matches during the 1928 Summer Olympics, where the Netherlands defeated Belgium and later played a match against Chile.

Het Kasteel takes its name from a castle-like building with two towers that still stands beside the pitch today, serving as the stadium's symbol. This structure connects supporters to Sparta Rotterdam's identity and makes the venue a focal point of local football culture.

The stadium is located in the Spangen neighborhood in western Rotterdam and is easily reached by tram 8 or metro. From the main railway station, it takes about 12 minutes by tram to a stop near the stadium, followed by a short walk to the entrance.

In 1970, Feyenoord's goalkeeper Eddy Treijtel accidentally shot a passing seagull out of the air with an errant kick. The bird is now displayed in a museum at Feyenoord's De Kuip stadium, though some Sparta fans wish it were shown in their museum instead.
