Leiderdorp

Leiderdorp is a small municipality south of Leiden that stretches along two river valleys in South Holland. The town has a modest layout with a historic village center surrounded by residential areas that blend seamlessly with the surrounding countryside.

Three medieval castles once stood in this area, built between the 1200s and 1400s by local noble families. Though the castles are long gone, their former presence shaped the development and identity of the settlement.

The Dorpskerk is a Protestant church that has served as a gathering place for residents since the 1600s and remains central to community life. Walking through the village, you can see how locals still connect with this historic building as a focal point of their town.

The town is very close to Leiden, making it easy to visit as part of a day trip or short stay in the region. The riverside location offers pleasant walking and cycling paths through the countryside.

A high-speed rail tunnel runs underground beneath the village, connecting distant cities without disturbing the peaceful landscape above. Few visitors realize that fast trains pass below ground while they walk through the quiet town.
