Koffiemolen, Stellingmill in Formerum, Netherlands
The Koffiemolen is a three-story standing mill in Formerum featuring four sails and a single-story stone base. It contains two pairs of millstones of different sizes used to grind grain into flour.
The mill was built in 1838 in West Terschelling and relocated to Formerum in 1876 by P S Bos. It operated for grain processing until modern times.
The ground floor transformation into a coffee house in 1964 maintained the original milling machinery while adding modern dining facilities to the structure.
The mill is easily accessible and centrally located in Formerum village on the island. You can walk around the grounds freely, and the entire site is flat and straightforward to navigate.
The cast-iron windshaft was made in 1891 by Prins van Oranje in The Hague and connects the sails to the brake wheel. This specialized mechanical part shows the craftsmanship of 19th-century mill engineering.
