Royal Burgers' Zoo, Zoo in Arnhem, Netherlands
Royal Burgers' Zoo is a zoo in Arnhem, Netherlands, covering 45 hectares (111 acres) and housing around 10,000 animals from 500 species across six specialized areas. The facility includes zones for mangrove, bush, ocean, rimba, desert, and safari, each representing different ecosystems.
Johan Burgers founded the site in 1913 as Faisanterie Buitenlust, a small park with pheasants and other birds. Over the decades the park grew into one of the largest animal parks in the Netherlands.
The name Burgers comes from the founding family, which has shaped the zoo's development for over a century and remains part of its management today. Visitors experience themed zones that recreate different habitats and display animals in groups as they would live together in nature.
The grounds open daily at 9 in the morning and offer restaurants, rest zones, and adapted paths for visitors with limited mobility. The different areas are spread across the entire site, with signs pointing the way to individual habitats.
The indoor Bush section covers one and a half hectares and recreates a complete rainforest environment with natural humidity, dense vegetation, and tropical animals. Visitors walk through this enclosed space where birds, butterflies, and other animals move freely among the trees.
