Het Nieuwe Huis

Het Nieuwe Huis is a residential complex in Amsterdam-Zuid with a distinctive U-shaped layout and rounded corners. Brown brick facades rest on natural stone bases with wrought iron railings, while the ground floor mixes dining facilities and retail spaces throughout the building.

The building was completed in 1928 as specialized housing for unmarried women with integrated community spaces. The original design of 188 apartments and a post office reflected contemporary ideas about social housing.

This building displays the distinctive approach of the Amsterdam School through its curved shapes and carefully detailed brickwork. Residents and visitors experience these communal spaces on the ground floor as gathering points that remain integral to neighborhood life.

The building stands at Roelof Hartplein 50 and is easily located in the southern Amsterdam-Zuid neighborhood. Visitors can explore the public areas where restaurants and retail spaces are accessible on the ground floor.

A square clock tower with four faces rises from the northern wing and is clad in natural stone. The narrow windows of the tower give it a distinctive look that sets it apart from the rest of the complex.
