Schunck, Art and architecture museum in Heerlen, Netherlands.
Schunck is an art and cultural center in Heerlen, housed mainly in the Glaspaleis, a 1930s building in the center of the city. It presents modern and contemporary Dutch art alongside works from other periods, across several exhibition spaces.
Arnold Schunck opened a textile department store in Heerlen in 1874, and over the following decades the institution gradually shifted toward culture. The Glaspaleis, opened in 1935, marked the turning point when the building took on the role it still holds today.
The Glaspaleis building, where Schunck is now housed, was originally built as a department store and is made almost entirely of glass. Walking through it today, you can see daylight coming in from every direction, giving the space a feeling very different from a typical museum.
The Glaspaleis is centrally located in Heerlen and easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. Since exhibitions change regularly, it is worth checking what is currently on before planning your visit.
The Glaspaleis was one of the first buildings in the Netherlands to use a fully glazed steel and concrete structure, designed by architect Frits Peutz in the 1930s. At the time, this kind of construction was almost unheard of in the country.
