Sint-Martinuskerk, Gothic church in Tegelen, Netherlands
Sint-Martinuskerk is a Gothic church in Tegelen that features a cruciform basilica layout with a five-sided closed choir. The late Gothic tower rises approximately 68 meters and defines the town's skyline.
Around 720, Saint Plechelm of Sint Odilienberg founded a wooden chapel at this location. The current building was constructed between 1899 and 1900 following plans by architect Caspar Franssen.
The church bears the name of Saint Martin, reflecting its long spiritual role in the community. The tall stained glass windows from the twentieth century shape the interior light and create a reflective space for visitors.
The church is located at Kerkstraat 1 and serves the parishes of Tegelen, Steyl, and Belfeld. Visitors will want to look carefully at the various historical artworks displayed throughout the interior.
The previous church building was destroyed by fireworks during Queen Wilhelmina's inauguration ceremony. This led to its demolition and the commissioning of the current structure.
