Valom, Rural hamlet in Het Hogeland, Netherlands
Valom is a small settlement in the Uithuizerpolder located at the northernmost point of mainland Netherlands. The hamlet sits within flat agricultural lands characteristic of the Groningen province.
The settlement emerged after a severe storm surge in 1877 that destroyed three houses under construction. This event shaped the hamlet's development and gave it its current form.
The community maintains traditional agricultural practices within the Groningen province, reflecting the regional farming heritage of northern Netherlands.
The hamlet lies far from larger centers and residents travel to nearby towns for daily needs and supplies. The flat landscape makes exploring the area on foot or by bike straightforward.
A windmill called Zwaluw was built in 1882 by a baker and shaped the hamlet's landscape for decades. The mill was completely demolished in 1950 and survives today only in older residents' memories.
