Het Hogeland, Municipality in Groningen Province, Netherlands
Het Hogeland is a municipality in northern Groningen that brings together urban centers, farmland, and coastal zones. The area stretches from inland villages to the Wadden Sea shoreline and includes both historic settlements and newer neighborhoods.
The municipality was created in 2019 when four smaller administrative areas merged into one. This joining together came from a need to manage the region more efficiently and strengthen its shared identity.
The region keeps alive traditions of farming and seafaring that shape how people live and work today. Local dialects and crafts are part of everyday life in the villages and port areas.
Trains and local buses link the different towns within the area and connect to Groningen city. Visitors can easily access walking trails, cycling routes, and coastal roads that run through the territory.
The area is home to Eemshaven, a major North Sea port that works as an energy hub with wind turbines and power stations. This port is an overlooked yet crucial part of the region's economy and European energy supply.
