Ewsum is a castle complex in Loppersum with a defensive tower built in 1472, double moats, and remnants of ring walls. The site sits within a landscape of lime trees and includes an eastern treasury building.
The Van Ewsum family built the first fortress in 1278 after Groningen forces destroyed their previous stronghold. The tower was later rebuilt to meet the city's requirements for advanced warfare methods.
The estate takes its name from the Van Ewsum family, who used it as a seat of power for centuries. The layout with its moats and walls reflects the authority this family held in the region.
The grounds preserve medieval architectural elements, including the octagonal upper structure of the defensive tower, which visitors can examine from various angles. Plan for uneven surfaces and open access to outdoor areas.
The defensive tower with its thickened walls still shows the technical adaptations needed to withstand advanced siege weapons. This construction style made it one of the strongest positions in the region.
