The Van Ewsum family constructed the initial fortress in 1278 after Groningen forces destroyed their previous stronghold, marking centuries of noble presence in Ommelanden.
Knight Onno van Ewsum, who received his title from the King of Cyprus, commissioned the reconstruction of Middelstum Church upon returning from his Holy Land journey.
The site maintains elements of its medieval architecture, including the octagonal upper structure of the defense tower, which visitors can examine from various angles.
The defense tower's construction in 1472 required specific adaptations to meet Groningen city requirements, resulting in increased wall thickness for advanced warfare techniques.
