Silodam, Amsterdam, Modern residential complex in Houthaven, Netherlands
Silodam is a modern residential building in Houthaven that extends over the IJ river and houses 157 apartments, offices, and shops. The ten-story structure features colored facades and connects all areas through galleries and corridors that lead to shared facilities including a fitness center and library.
The building was constructed between 1995 and 2003 on a former breakwater and incorporates historic grain silos from 1896 in Amsterdam's western harbor. This mix of old port infrastructure and new housing continues to define the location today.
The building displays different apartment sizes side by side, allowing various lifestyles to exist within one community and reflecting Amsterdam's diversity. You notice this variety immediately in the colorful facades and the different balconies and terraces across the structure.
The site is easy to explore through several entrances and walking paths that lead to all public areas. Visitors can best experience the mixed-use spaces in early morning or late afternoon when fewer people are around.
The facades are deliberately painted in different colors to distinguish blocks from each other and give the place a playful quality. This colorful approach was unusual for such a large modern housing project at the time.
