Sint-Gabriël, Catholic monastery in Haastrecht, Netherlands.
Sint-Gabriël is a Passionist monastery in Haastrecht situated in Krimpenerwaard alongside the Hollandse IJssel River. The complex features a chapel and occupies a quiet location overlooking the river landscape.
The monastery was designed and built by architect Joseph Franssen between 1921 and 1922. It became the administrative headquarters of the Passionist congregation in 1967.
The name honors Saint Gabriel dell'Adolorata, an Italian friar canonized in 1920 for his religious devotion. The monastery served as a training place where Passionist missionaries prepared for their work abroad.
The site contains an iron-gated cemetery along the riverbank where Passionist fathers and brothers are buried. The cemetery holds historical records documenting the religious community and its members over time.
The monastery serves a dual purpose as both a spiritual center for prayer and devotion and an administrative building for the Passionist movement. This combination makes it an uncommon example of how religious orders organize themselves in the Netherlands.
