Rhederlaag, Recreation area in Zevenaar, Netherlands
Rhederlaag is a recreation area near Zevenaar with several connected lakes including Lathumse Plas, Westerplas, Gieseplas and Valeplas spread across hundreds of hectares. The site offers marinas, camping facilities and day-use areas accessible via multiple roads from surrounding villages.
This location took its current shape in the late 1960s when two large river meanders of the IJssel were cut off during a channelization project. This engineering work created the water bodies that form the foundation for today's recreation and water sports activities.
The area hosts the Dreamfields Festival each year, which has become a major event drawing thousands of visitors to the waterside location. The celebrations take place along the shore and have shaped the cultural identity of the region.
The area is easily accessible by car via multiple entry roads with ample parking at various access points. The best season for land and water sports is from May through October when weather conditions are most favorable.
Some of the lakes reach depths exceeding 30 meters, creating an unusual inland water sports destination near the German border. These deep-water areas enable specialized diving and sailing activities that are rare to find in this otherwise flat region.
