Bolwerk, Sneek
The Bolwerk is a small fortification in Súdwest-Fryslân that stands as a solid stone structure from centuries past. It sits within a flat landscape crossed by waterways and open fields, showing how defensive structures were built and positioned in this region.
In the 16th century, water channels and earthen walls protected Bolsward from attack. Over the centuries, most defenses were removed as the town no longer needed them, but the Hoog Bolwerk remained and survived to show how the town once defended itself.
The Bolwerk shows how people in Friesland once lived with water and land as part of their daily world and their need to defend themselves. The way it sits in the flat landscape tells us how the community shaped their surroundings for both protection and settlement.
A path made of shells runs along the water and is easy to walk for visitors of all ages. The site is open and accessible, offering a quiet spot to stroll and take in the surroundings at a leisurely pace.
The Hoog Bolwerk was nearly demolished, but decision makers chose to save it and protect it for future generations instead. This choice to preserve one remaining piece made it a national monument that connects the present day with centuries of local history.
