ASTA-theater, Movie theater and publishing house on Spui, The Hague, Netherlands
The ASTA-theater is a movie theater and publishing house located on Spui in central The Hague featuring Art Deco design elements. Artist Chris Lebeau created the elaborate decorations that define the building's distinctive appearance.
The building opened in 1921 and was operated as an entertainment venue by the German Ufa chain until World War II. This period marked an important chapter in Dutch cinema history.
Named after Danish-German actress Asta Nielsen, the theater contained the largest organ in Holland with 4 manuals and 29 ranks during its operation.
The former cinema at Spui 27 has changed its use over the decades and now hosts different types of events and entertainment. Check ahead to learn what activities or functions are currently taking place at the venue.
The theater ran its own publishing operation between 1926 and 1928 to produce program books for visitors. During roughly the same years, the German acrobatic dance duo Zammit and Grube performed there regularly from 1925 to 1935.
