First documented in 1106, Kasteel Ter Aa served as the residence of the Van der Aa family, who held the position of bailiffs for the Bishop of Utrecht.
The name 'Aa' derives from Old Dutch meaning water, reflecting the castle's connection to the regional water management and land reclamation efforts.
The castle site remains in private ownership, with modern residences constructed over the former castle grounds in the Stichtse Vecht municipality.
The Van der Aa family surpassed the influence of both Van Woerden and Van Amstel families until 1170, as shown in legal document signatures.
