Genneperhuis, Medieval fortress ruins at the confluence of Niers and Maas rivers in Milsbeek, Netherlands
Genneperhuis is a medieval fortress situated where the Niers and Maas rivers meet in Gennep, Netherlands. The remains show earthworks, raised ground levels, and foundation outlines that reveal how the stronghold was once arranged.
The fortress developed during the Middle Ages as a seat of local rule and switched hands several times between Spanish and Dutch forces during the Dutch Revolt. French armies destroyed it in the early 18th century, and it was never rebuilt.
The family that once ruled this area left their mark on local history and the region's identity. Their names and stories remain connected to this landscape today.
The site is accessible on foot with several walking paths and bridges that cross the archaeological remains and connect different areas. Benches and information panels are placed around the site to help visitors understand and enjoy their walk.
Starting in 2023, veterans dealing with trauma worked alongside professional archaeologists studying the site. This project linked the military past of the location to healing work through participation in historical research.
