H.H. Nicolaas en Barbara, Gothic parish church in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands
H.H. Nicolaas en Barbara is a Gothic parish church with a cross-shaped floor plan, a central medieval tower, and ribbed vaults spanning multiple construction periods. The walls are built from local marlstone and show architectural development across different eras.
The site began as a Roman location, became a chapel in 1226, and received parish church status in 1281. Substantial expansions followed that shaped its present form.
The interior displays late Gothic artworks, including a Mary with Child statue from the 16th century and stained glass windows by Jacques Verheyen created after 1945. These pieces shape the visual character of the sacred space.
Visit during times when religious services are not taking place. It is best to check in advance whether visits outside of worship times are permitted.
Between 1633 and 1819, Catholics and Protestants shared the same worship space. This unusual arrangement lasted until the 19th century.
