Wickenburgh

Wickenburgh is a fifteen-hectare estate in Houten comprising a mansion, outbuildings, gardens, meadows, and forested areas. The property also features a stone pigeon tower standing twelve meters tall, which ranks among the oldest of its kind in the region.

The estate was originally named Westenstein and established before 1300, then underwent reconstruction in the fourteenth century. This transformation from a motte castle into a country house shaped its lasting character.

The mansion functions as a venue for weddings and musical performances, where two preserved rooms called the Salon and Herenkamer can host gatherings of up to fifty people. Visitors experience a working estate that continues to serve the community for celebrations and cultural events.

The estate opens to visitors from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM with no entrance fee, while guided tours run at scheduled times throughout the day. The grounds span a large area, so comfortable walking shoes are advisable for exploring.

The pigeon tower houses 317 nesting boxes, representing a rare fortified structure tied to medieval farm management. This building reveals how noble families once managed food resources through poultry raising.
