Hulshorsterzand, Nature area in Nunspeet, Netherlands
Hulshorsterzand is a nature area featuring sand drifts, open heathland, and scattered vegetation between Harderwijk and Nunspeet in the northwestern Veluwe. The terrain offers diverse landscapes with various habitats for wildlife and plant species.
About two centuries ago, sand drifts covered a much larger area in the western Veluwe, but were reduced through extensive forest planting for timber production. This transformation shaped the landscape for generations.
Natuurmonumenten collaborates with local authorities to maintain a balance between preserving the natural habitat and providing recreational access to visitors.
The area is accessible from a parking area at Hierderweg and offers four marked walking trails of varying lengths for different experience levels. Visitors can find food services and facilities nearby to support their visit.
A restoration project has created heath corridors connecting this area with nearby heathlands, providing habitat for rare insect species such as the yellow bumblebee fly. These connections allow endangered species to colonize new areas and establish stable populations.
