Westerbouwing, Recreational estate in Renkum, Netherlands.
Westerbouwing is a recreational estate in Renkum that spreads across wooded grounds between Heveadorp and Doorwerth, offering views toward the Nederrijn river and its floodplain areas. The grounds include a restaurant, multiple walking paths, memorial markers, and are positioned within easy cycling distance from Arnhem.
Records from 1760 mention a house with growing woodland and orchards on the site, which was purchased in 1764 by Arnhem mayor Gijsbert Tulleken. In 1824, landowner Derk Gaymans built a tea room called Gaymans dome, which became a notable social gathering place.
The name refers to its western location on the estate grounds, and visitors today find it serves as a popular meeting spot drawing locals and tourists for leisurely walks and gatherings. The setting is shaped by its proximity to the river, creating an open and welcoming character.
The grounds are relatively flat and easily walkable, with wide paths suitable for most visitors. The best time to explore is during warmer months when the restaurant terraces are open and all walking routes are fully accessible.
During the 1950s, the grounds operated a cable car and swan train rides before transforming into its present format. These amusement attractions faded after several decades, eventually giving way to the more leisurely experience visitors find today.
