Windlust, Historic windmill in Noordwolde, Netherlands
Windlust is an octagonal smock mill equipped with four patent sails spanning roughly 21 meters. The interior contains mechanical systems for grain processing that remain visible and functional.
The structure originated in the medieval period and evolved from a storage facility into an active processing center. Over the centuries it underwent modernizations to keep pace with technological advances.
The name refers to the pleasure derived from wind, which powered the daily work here. Today it demonstrates how traditional milling skills remain rooted in the local community.
The mill is viewable during set opening hours, and knowledgeable millers demonstrate how the grinding system operates. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the path and interior stairs can be uneven.
Inside are cast-iron components from 1892 made by a local foundry. These historical parts remain fully functional and contribute to the mill's smooth operation today.
