Groene Hartpad, wandelroute in het Groene Hart, Nederland
The Groene Hartpad is a hiking trail in the Netherlands that stretches almost 200 kilometers through two provinces and is marked with yellow and red signs. The route winds through open fields, small villages, lakes, and river landscapes and is divided into eleven daily sections.
The route passes through Woerden, a town with roots going back to Roman times, and past old farmhouses and churches that tell the story of settlement in the region. Woerden has a medieval castle that originally served for defense and now hosts exhibitions.
The trail passes through villages and small towns where you can watch how people live in rural communities. Farmers work their fields, local shops and cafes dot the town centers, and you get a sense of daily life away from cities.
Train stations in Delft, Zoetermeer, Alphen aan den Rijn, Woerden, and Rotterdam make it easy to divide the route into sections or start at different points. Overnight accommodation is limited, so you should plan campsites and lodging in small villages ahead of time.
The Nieuwkoopse Plassen, a lake and wetland area along the route, is an important breeding ground for birds like herons, teals, and starlings. The open sky over the water and the gentle rustle of reeds create a particularly calm feeling here.
