Grote of Sint-Barbarakerk, Gothic basilica in Culemborg, Netherlands
The Grote of Sint-Barbarakerk is a Gothic basilica in Culemborg with a large central nave defined by two historic organs and seven copper crowns. A carved wooden pulpit and marble monuments occupy the space, while a modern glass hall with kitchen and archive facilities come from renovations in 2000.
The building started as a chapel in 1300 and became a parish church in 1310, marking its growing importance in the community. Major expansions took place during the 14th and 15th centuries, when it reached its current size.
The church holds a collection of silver communion items, including a baptismal font that shows the religious practices over centuries. The burial sites of the Lords of Culemborg are found inside, marking the connection between the church and the city's leading families.
Access is through the Gothic facade, and visitors should allow time to view the organs and interior details. The modern facilities including the glass hall make exploring the different areas comfortable.
The bell tower holds a carillon of 47 bells, several cast by the Hemony brothers who were master craftsmen. This instrument ranks among the most important musical treasures in the Netherlands and is still played today.
