Sint-Barbarakerk, Neo-Gothic Catholic church in Culemborg, Netherlands
Sint-Barbarakerk is a Neo-Gothic Catholic church in Culemborg featuring a prominent tower called Barbaratoren. The building stands at Markt square and combines brick with natural stone in its construction.
The church was built in 1886 by architect Petrus Johannes van Genk to replace the deteriorating Sint-Janskerk. It received its consecration on December 4, the feast day of Saint Barbara.
The Elisabeth Bell from 1555 carries the name of Elisabeth of Culemborg and was cast by Jan Tolhuis, yet it no longer sounds due to past damage. This historical object links the building to the town's story and shows how treasures from distant centuries survive.
The building holds the status of a Rijksmonument with number 11576 and underwent major restoration work in 1991. The organ inside received maintenance work multiple times between 1972 and 1992 to keep it functioning.
Inside sits an organ made by Christian Gottlieb Friedrich Witte in 1861, originally from the older Janskerk. This instrument survived the move between buildings and underwent several updates during the process.
