Willemsdorp, Settlement along Beneden Merwede River in Dordrecht, Netherlands
Willemsdorp is a small settlement on the Beneden Merwede River at the southwestern tip of Dordrecht island. The village features a marina with mooring spaces, camping facilities, vacation homes, and a residential area with a cafe that serves locals and visitors.
The settlement began in 1822 when a road and ferry service to Moerdijk were established, named after King Willem I. The area witnessed military conflict in May 1940 when Dutch soldiers engaged German paratroopers near what is now a memorial site.
A monument stands next to the former military post, marking the location where Dutch soldiers fought against German paratroopers in May 1940.
The location is easily accessible and offers several options for visitors looking to spend time near water. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the camping and water activities are in full operation.
The marina was built in 1975 within the grounds of the former ferry harbor, reusing the existing waterfront infrastructure. A camping site from 1963 later transformed into a vacation park with dining and swimming facilities for summer guests.
