Nieuwpoort

Nieuwpoort is a fortified town in South Holland featuring six defensive bastions and earthen ramparts encircling the entire settlement in a distinctive military layout. Water channels run through the center, creating a distinctive pattern that defines how the place looks today.

The town received its charter in 1283 when local lords donated land for establishing the settlement. The fortification system developed later to protect residents from flooding and military threats.

The town hall stands above a central canal, representing the Dutch architectural practice of integrating water management systems into municipal structures.

The best way to explore the fortification is to walk around the ramparts, where you can see the entire structure from different angles. The flat terrain makes it easy to move through the area and observe the layout from various viewpoints.

The town features a false bray defense structure that runs along its perimeter, setting it apart from other Dutch fortified towns of its era. This construction method was uncommon and provided additional protective advantages for residents.
