Molenlanden, municipality in the Netherlands
Molenlanden is a municipality in South Holland in the Netherlands, created in 2019 when Giessenlanden and Molenwaard merged. It sits along the Lek river east of Rotterdam and includes several settlements with Groot-Ammers as its main town, along with Arkel, Bleskensgraaf, and Nieuw-Lekkerland.
Over many centuries, the region was shaped by the construction of dikes and windmills to control flooding and keep fields dry. The mills pumped water away and made the land fertile for farming, a tradition that continues to define the area today.
The name Molenlanden comes from the mills that shaped this land. Today you can see how the water and these structures remain central to how residents live and think about their surroundings.
The municipality is easy to reach by train or car from Rotterdam and other nearby cities. Once there, biking or traveling by boat offers the best way to explore the countryside and settlements at your own pace.
Kinderdijk, a part of this municipality, is recognized worldwide for its windmills that have stood for many years and still turn slowly in the wind. These mills demonstrate how people have used nature for centuries to manage water and prevent flooding in this low-lying landscape.
