De Donk

De Donk is a small settlement with farmhouses and residences spread along the Donkseweg road in an area shaped by a sand dune. The buildings are positioned across terrain that stands higher than the surrounding polder landscape.

A Cistercian sisters monastery once stood on the sand dune until the Protestant Reformation led to its closure. This religious community had been an important presence before the settlement changed.

The place is connected to farming traditions, with many residents having deep roots in agricultural work across generations. The way houses are scattered reflects how the settlement adapted to the natural landscape.

The settlement is small and best explored on foot, with houses spread along one main road. A Staatsbosbeheer office on site provides a natural reference point for visitors.

The settlement sits atop a sand dune that rises noticeably above the flat polder areas surrounding it. This geographical feature made the location stand out in the otherwise flat landscape over many centuries.
