Klooster de Stad Gods, Monastery and abbey in Hilversum, Netherlands
Klooster de Stad Gods is a monastery and abbey located in a wooded area called Monnikenberg, northeast of Soestdijkerstraatweg in Hilversum. It consists of a chapel and three residential wings arranged around a central villa.
The building was designed in 1900 as a villa by architect J.F. Klinkenberg and became a religious center in 1946. During the German occupation in World War II, it sheltered Jewish orphans.
The sisters who lived here spent their days supporting local families through care and guidance. The place was known in the area as somewhere people could turn to in difficult moments.
The grounds sit among trees and are accessible via walking paths, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. A visit works best in dry weather, as the paths run through forested terrain.
Since 2017, the site has been used as a filming location for the television series Dream School, giving the former religious building a new role. The original villa architecture is clearly visible on screen and serves as the backdrop for the production.
