Doorwerth, Medieval castle village in Gelderland, Netherlands.
Doorwerth is a village in Gelderland situated along the southern edge of the Veluwe region, defined by dense forests, elevated terrain, and the Rhine River forming its border. The settlement blends residential areas with surrounding natural landscape.
The settlement started with a small wooden fortress built in medieval times to collect tolls from river traffic. This original structure later transformed into the stone castle that came to define the village.
The village hosts an annual Airborne walking event each September that honors soldiers who took part in Operation Market Garden during World War II. Visitors walk the historic routes and hear stories connected to that period of fighting.
The center near Van der Molenallee has grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants for daily visits. The city center of Arnhem lies about 8 kilometers to the east for more extensive shopping or dining needs.
The residential neighborhoods are so interwoven with the forest landscape that natural surroundings remain intact despite the Netherlands' high population density. This creates an unusual balance between urban living and nature in this densely populated region.
