Nederlands Hervormde Kerk, Heelsum

Nederlands Hervormde Kerk is a church building in Heelsum with a tower on the western end connected to an elongated nave and choir section. The structure uses traditional Dutch brickwork and sits as a solid landmark in the local landscape.

The church was built between 1517 and 1519 under the order of castle lord Frederik van Voorst. A major change happened in 1648 when its windows were sealed shut, likely due to religious and political shifts of that era.

The building carries the name of a reformed congregation and its interior shows traces of religious shifts in the region. The pulpit from 1657 came from a Lutheran community in Arnhem and still draws the eye of visitors walking through the nave.

The building welcomes visitors during set hours and is maintained by a local foundation. It is wise to check opening times beforehand to make sure you can enter and look around.

The current organ contains pipes from an 1864 instrument made by D. van Rossum that survived the Second World War. These old pipes were incorporated into a new organ built in 2004, linking past and present within the same instrument.
