Memorial cemetery Loenen

This national cemetery spreads across 17 hectares of wooded land and contains over 3,900 flat stone markers honoring those who died in military conflicts. The grounds hold graves of soldiers, resistance fighters, and civilians from multiple nations and different periods.

The government established this cemetery in 1947 to repatriate remains of citizens who perished abroad during World War II and subsequent conflicts. It grew into a memorial for victims spanning multiple decades and various military operations.

The central chapel displays memorial books and a wooden triptych honoring those who attempted escape to England during the war, reflecting how the place remembers different forms of resistance. Visitors encounter spaces dedicated to acknowledging sacrifice across various backgrounds and circumstances.

The site is located in Loenen near Apeldoorn and welcomes visitors for quiet reflection and remembrance. The wooded setting provides peaceful paths for walking and contemplation.
