Fort bij Abcoude, Military fortress in Abcoude, Netherlands.
Fort bij Abcoude is a military fortress in De Ronde Venen in the Netherlands, built entirely from solid brick. The structure is surrounded by a moat and features underground passageways that connect different sections.
The fortress was built between 1884 and 1887 as part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. It served a role during both world wars and is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The name comes from Abcoude, the nearby village by the river. Today visitors walk through spaces that show how soldiers lived and worked in such confined quarters.
The fort is only accessible at certain times and requires a guided tour to enter the interior. It is best visited with sturdy shoes, as the ground can be uneven and sometimes slippery.
This fort is the only fortification in the Defence Line built entirely of brick without stone or concrete. Inside are several bomb-proof rooms, including an infirmary and ammunition storage, showing how self-sufficient the soldiers needed to be.
