Spannenburg, Rural hamlet in De Fryske Marren, Netherlands.
Spannenburg is a small hamlet in De Fryske Marren located where regional roads intersect near the Prinses Margrietkanaal. The settlement features traditional wooden houses scattered among farmland and pastures.
The area developed from Wollegaast and took its name from Tjaas Spanneburg, who opened an inn called Wapen van Friesland in 1848. This establishment as a waystation shaped the settlement's growth in the following decades.
The hamlet is rooted in Frisian traditions, particularly the practice of ice skating on natural waterways that has shaped local life for generations. Such winter activities remain central to how residents connect with their surroundings.
The location is served by bus routes 41 and 42, which connect to larger towns including Heerenveen, Balk, Sneek, and Lemmer. Its central position makes it easy to explore the region using public transport.
The hamlet has housed a drinking water treatment facility since 1937 that continues to serve the region. Additionally, the province's tallest telecommunications tower was built here in 1972.
