National Sports Centre Papendal, National Olympic training center of the Netherlands
The National Sports Centre Papendal is a training and events facility set in the Veluwe forests near Arnhem. It contains multiple training halls for different sports, outdoor playing fields, a four-star hotel, and conference spaces spread across a large, green site.
The center was founded in the early 1960s to support Dutch elite athletes. Princess Beatrix officially opened it in 1971, and it has grown continuously since then, with major expansions like the Arnhemhall added in 2013.
The name Papendal refers to a historical location in the region with deep roots in local identity. The site functions as a gathering place where athletes, coaches, and visitors share a common dedication to excellence in sport.
The site is easy to navigate and offers guided tours to explore the training facilities. Visitors can stay overnight, dine in the restaurants, and attend various events and competitions held throughout the year.
The center uses an innovative system with underground water storage to regulate the temperature of all buildings and save energy. Additionally, solar panels on the roof of the Arnhemhall generate about one-third of the building's electricity needs.
