Buurttuin Oosterpoort, Community garden in Oosterpoort district, Netherlands
Buurttuin Oosterpoort is a community garden located in a courtyard setting behind Mauritsstraat 5, with flower meadows, play areas, and diverse plant species throughout. The space includes willow structures and remnants of older buildings now covered with ivy and flowering plants, creating layered green zones across the grounds.
The site was previously occupied by Mauritsschool, a Christian primary school with kindergarten facilities from the 1960s era. Following its time as a school, the land later served as a Municipal Housing Bureau before being transformed into a community garden.
The garden serves as a gathering place where neighbors actively tend plants and care for the shared green space together. You can see community members working side by side, making this spot a place where local involvement shapes what happens daily.
You can visit the garden during daylight hours and explore the different areas at a comfortable pace on foot. Wearing comfortable shoes is helpful as you navigate the paths between planted areas and structures, especially if visiting with children.
The garden was established in 1999 by Peter Bulk and landscape architect Ger Roosjen, deliberately incorporating building ruins from the past into its design. This approach shows how old structures can remain part of the landscape when blended thoughtfully with new planting and growth.
