Wilhelminapark, Sneek, Public park in Sneek, Netherlands
Wilhelminapark is a public park in Sneek with an island surrounded by water, featuring winding paths, elliptical flower beds, and two small hills across its layout. The park offers numerous benches and shaded areas throughout its grounds for visitors to rest.
The park was created in 1898 by the Old Burger Orphanage of Sneek and named after Queen Wilhelmina during her inauguration that same year. The original landscape design by G.L. Vlaskamp from this period remains in place.
The park serves as a gathering place for Sneek residents and features an aviary with peacocks, special ducks, crowned cranes, and other animals. This wildlife draws visitors of all ages and makes it a favorite spot for families.
The park is located in the northwest section of Sneek, situated between Franekervaart, Oude Dijk, and Bolswarderweg, making it easy to find. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the winding paths and hills are best explored on foot.
The park holds the distinction of being the second in the Netherlands to receive national protection status, following only Amsterdam's Vondelpark. This protection reflects its importance as one of the finest surviving examples of landscape design from the late 1800s.
