Amsterdamse Poort, Shopping mall in Amsterdam Zuidoost, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdamse Poort is a shopping mall in the Amsterdam Zuidoost neighborhood, with over 230 stores selling clothing, shoes, furniture, bicycles, and more. The complex is partly covered and partly open-air, with wide walkways that make it easy to move from one section to another.
The mall was built to serve as the main shopping hub for the Bijlmermeer district, a large residential area planned in the 1960s. Over the decades it expanded and was updated to keep pace with the growing population around it.
The mall is easy to reach by public transit, with several bus and train lines stopping nearby. For those arriving by car, large parking garages are available right next to the complex.
Inside the mall, a covered market called the Shopperhal brings together stalls selling Indonesian specialties, Surinamese dishes, and other foods that reflect the make-up of the local community. These small food counters, known locally as tokos, are a direct reflection of the people who have shaped the Zuidoost neighborhood over generations.
