Krommenie, Industrial village in North Holland, Netherlands
Krommenie is a village in North Holland situated within Zaanstad municipality and shaped by its industrial past. The settlement sits on flat terrain near the Zaan river and is well connected by rail to Amsterdam and Alkmaar.
The village began in the 11th century as a peat extraction site where workers systematically harvested peat layers for fuel. After centuries as an independent settlement, it merged into Zaanstad municipality in 1974.
The village is home to two notable churches that reflect its religious past: a Dutch Reformed church dating to the 15th century and an Old Catholic church from 1602. These buildings show how different faith communities coexisted in the settlement over the centuries.
The village is best explored by train, as Krommenie-Assendelft railway station offers regular connections in both directions. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the flat terrain is crisscrossed with paths and cycling routes.
The village is home to SolaRoad, the world's first solar bike path with transparent surfaces covering solar cells. This innovative route generates electricity as cyclists travel across it daily.
