Huis Scherpenzeel

Huis Scherpenzeel is a manor house with two symmetrical wings topped by stepped gables and a central tower. The building sits protected within a moat that is crossed by a footbridge, which provides the main entry point to the grounds.

The original fortified house dates to the 14th century and was built for the Van Scherpenzeel family. The property changed hands several times over the centuries, moving between Utrecht and Gelderland territories.

The vegetable garden is maintained by local volunteers today, showing how the community stays connected to the property's heritage. This ongoing care reflects the way people around Scherpenzeel view the estate as part of their shared identity.

The estate can only be visited during Open Monument Day, which takes place every three years. Plan your visit around this special opening, as the house is not regularly accessible to the public.

The tower at the rear of the building was designed as an emergency refuge for times of danger. What makes it curious is that it originally stood as a separate structure before later being integrated into the main house.
