Maashorst, Nature reserve in Oss, Netherlands
Maashorst is a nature reserve in Oss covering forests, heathlands, and wetlands as part of the Nature Network Brabant. The area is surrounded by small agricultural fields that form part of the local landscape.
The landscape began transforming from agricultural land in 2016 when grazing animals were introduced to restore natural habitats. This shift was part of a broader effort to recreate the ecological conditions that existed in the region previously.
Multiple municipalities and organizations work together to maintain the ecological balance while providing recreational opportunities for local communities and visitors.
Marked trails allow visitors to walk and cycle through the reserve with signage providing guidance and information about the landscape. Conditions vary by season and weather, particularly in wetland areas where the terrain can be soft and muddy.
European bison, Tauros cattle, and Exmoor ponies roam the area as part of a continental rewilding initiative. These animals establish breeding populations while helping shape the landscape through their natural grazing behavior.
