Van Gogh church, Nuenen

This church in Nuenen is an octagonal brick building with an open tower, protected as a national monument. The interior preserves original furnishings including the baptismal font and lectern in the main hall.

The building was completed in 1824 and gained significance when Theodorus van Gogh, father of painter Vincent, became pastor in 1882. This family connection later linked the site to the painter's artistic legacy.

Vincent van Gogh created paintings of this church in 1884, expressing his connection to the building through detailed depictions of its architecture.

The site is located in Nuenen and welcomes visitors only on selected Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the year. It is best to check ahead about opening days and plan your visit accordingly.

This is one of the earliest examples of Waterstaat churches, a type funded by the Dutch government in the 1800s. These buildings showcase a simple, functional design that was characteristic of that era.
