Watertoren Noorderbinnensingel, Water tower near Noorderbinnensingel, Netherlands.
Watertoren Noorderbinnensingel is a water tower in Groningen standing 45 meters tall with brick walls. A black steel water reservoir holding 1000 cubic meters and a twelve-sided zinc roof define its appearance.
The structure was built in 1908 for the Academic Hospital in Groningen and was the first water tower in the Netherlands with a steel underframe. It stands today as an important record of early industrial water technology.
The tower has transformed from an empty building into the Bovenkamer van Groningen, a center for business meetings and cultural events. Visitors and locals use the space for lectures, exhibitions, and social gatherings.
The tower sits within the care complex De Ebbingepoort and is visible from the outside. Interior spaces can be used for events or visits, though it is helpful to ask ahead about access.
The tower uses a Barkhausen reservoir design, one of only three such structures ever built in the Netherlands. This special system was an innovation in early water storage technology.
