Kasteel Zuilichem, Bauwerk in den Niederlanden
Kasteel Zuilichem is a castle ruin in Zaltbommel near the river Waal. Only foundations and reconstructed wall sections remain from the medieval fortress, showing where the main square tower and fortifications once stood.
The castle was built in the 12th century and was an important stronghold for controlling river traffic and collecting tolls. It was destroyed in 1543 by troops under King Charles V and was never fully rebuilt afterward.
The ruin site is easily accessible on foot from Zaltbommel town center. You can walk freely around the foundations and reconstructed walls, with an information board explaining the history.
An original drawing by Constantijn Huygens Jr. from 1657 shows the castle after it was destroyed, giving a rare glimpse of its appearance a century later. This historical drawing is preserved in a museum in Zaltbommel.
