STAR, Heritage railway in Stadskanaal, Netherlands
STAR is a heritage railway running restored trains across 26 kilometers of track between Veendam and Musselkanaal in northeastern Netherlands. The route passes through flat countryside with multiple stations where passengers can board or explore railway facilities and historic equipment.
The railway line was established in 1905 as the North Eastern Local Railway, serving the region for more than 8 decades with regular passenger trains. After regular service ended in 1990, volunteers rescued the line and restored it to welcome visitors on seasonal excursions today.
The stations along the route display items and stories about how people in this region depended on trains for their daily journeys decades ago. Visitors can still feel this everyday travel culture when they walk through the period station buildings.
Passengers can board at any of the stations along the route and should check ahead for seasonal operating dates. The flat terrain makes travel comfortable, and each station area offers spaces to explore while trains are prepared for departure.
The railway is entirely operated by volunteers who maintain locomotives and run trains as a labor of passion. This team of railway enthusiasts has kept one of the Netherlands' longest working heritage lines running through their dedication and skill.
