Sint Georgiusbasiliek, Almelo

Sint Georgiusbasiliek is a Neo-Gothic church in Almelo with a 73-meter-high tower that stands prominently in the city. The building has a cross-shaped layout and houses religious artworks inside that reflect the skilled craftsmanship of earlier times.

Architect Wolter te Riele designed this building following Neo-Gothic principles, with construction taking place between 1900 and 1902. Official recognition as a minor basilica came in 2009, which gave the site additional ecclesiastical standing.

The name honors Saint George, the patron saint of the city, and reflects the deep religious connections of the local community. Inside, the altars and religious artworks showcase the craftsmanship that visitors can appreciate during their visit.

A baptismal font from the 14th century, originally from an earlier church at Kerkplein, is still preserved within the basilica today. This medieval artifact connects the present building to the religious history of the area across multiple centuries.
